A mate of mine is thinking of starting a MMA career. His style pairing is Kyokushin Karate and Catch wrestling. Stand up- Kyokushin Karate Clinch- Catch wrestling Ground- Catch wrestling
Is that a good combination for MMA?

I'd say it's great and both are good but not all styles of catch are real catch.
shooto, csw, saw etc are not catch but do contain catch elements & there's a lot of fakes out there teaching the art who are just fake wrestlers teaching show holds
the clinch in catch is weird and they use "leg dives" and "pivots" and other weird moves that can land your opponent right in a sub if their not careful and are kinda sambo looking.
others probably know more about kyokushin than me

I'd say you're discussing Georges St Pierre and Bas Rutten. Both are Kyokushin and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black-belts but both utilise more wrestling tactics than grappling style.

Mostly picked up by experience rather than proper training. Bas was a natural when it came to manhandling people.

yeah bas was naturally a beast but I don't think he was a catch wrestler proper but he was a great submission grappler.
I think the only pure catch guy in japan who does pure catch is the 63 year old Yoshiaki Fujiwara & everyone else has a hybrid style based on catch, judo & sambo or something like that according to billy robinson, who's probably the worlds last living master of catch.

yeah him gene lebell, dick cardinal & billy wicks are the last old timers still doing it.
I know billy two rivers & johny powers are real old school catch wrestlers too but idk if they are teaching anymore & their sites have no activity unfortunately.
So if you want names to look up there's a few good & reputable ones.
