Personally, I throw my straights with my palms facing outside with my first two knuckles making contact. I internally rotate my shoulder and slightly lift the elbow when I throw. The shoulder lifts to protect the same side of the face as well as absorb the recoil rather than the wrist. I badly sprained my wrist during a sparring session which actually helped correct my punching technique. I used to punch the conventional palms-facing-down which still gave me some pain following recovery of my wrist. I found that it hurt a lot less and I could punch with full power without any pain by 'corkscrewing' my wrist as I through a straight just like a boxers.

I haven't boxed outside of playful sparring with actual boxing gloves.
My strikes range from the top two, or bottom three, or whole fist. I've never liked the idea of the 'pheonix eye' on knuckle fist JW posted, though it was the favorite of one of my teacher's teacher. I also don't punch with the middle finger joint extended (like a noogie). I'll use those fists for grinding into pressure points, but that's the extent for me. I've broken too many bones in my hands. When I punch, my hand is hollow and relaxed before impact.

I've gotten lazy with my punching Thankfully after the years I still punch mostly correct. However, I have developed some tendonitis in my left wrist because of it. And and if I let my technique slip too much my wrist lets me know about it for about a week. So, I try to keep everything wrapped really tight and hit with the two big knuckles, as that seems to keep any side effects to bearable.

I posted that chart for a reason. In TMA there are many striking points. We have then on charts available for everyone to purchase. In some places they are posted in the dojo. But they aren't often taught anymore. They have a purpose. Most people learn to just punch hard and hope for the best. Most places don't do the conditioning of their bodies to be able to use finger strikes one knuckle strikes or toe kicks. Most people don't know what the targets are for those strikes.
These all have a purpose and can be useful only if we take advantage of those with the knowledge and learn how to use them ourselves.

and I'm also surprised how little is taught about targeting vital area & their effects and that's an interesting chart it looks like it has all the same marks as the one I follow for kung fu but ours has 108 spots but the effects vary drastically whereas I bet the karate ones are much more specific to damaging than other affects like cramping & charley-horsing along side the damaging used in kung fu because kung fu is about finishing the fight in 3 moves or less not just 1 like karate so the first 2 moves affect the body and the 3rd is the finisher instead of the 1ts being a finisher.

I wonder how that one hit one kill got started. I've read some stuff, but I don't know how accurate they were. It is in my opinion unrealistic to believe in one hit one kill. Yes one strike can take a person out, but that will not happen every time. If that were true we would never have to practice combinations. We are taught always to follow up. We teach to transition from one technique to another. Why? Because the first one might not go as planned.
