I agree. Aliveness and full contact sparring are extremely essential in terms of beneficial practice for real self defense situations.

Glutton4Punishment – I agree that full contact sparring is necessary for the same reasons you stated. The reason why I think it’s over valued is the fact that with this discovery of the value of aliveness training people seems to over train in this way. It’s great in terms of getting mentally and physically used to physical conflicts, but over training in this way seems to take away the time from the perfection of techniques to be had by none pressured training. Actually I train MMA and we spar pretty much for the half of the class, and most martial arts places I have visited have done the same. So I have been speaking to that kind of audience in mind. If the gym/dojo is like aikido dojos I have heard about then I suppose aliveness training cannot be over emphasized to them.
