Lately I've been going against this guy that has been hard for me to take him down. At first I approached him with double legs but soon realized he has so much more leverage to sprawl on me, and having shorter limbs doesn't help at all. I'm 5'4" and this guy's about 6'4" atleast. After trying different approaches I realized the ankle pick is my best friend. As well as the single leg when I set it up right. This guy takes wide steps when I circle around him really fast, as soon as he sets down his lead leg, I shoot in, turn the corner then switch to a double leg and execute it easily. What other takedown approaches should I use on this guy? I also arm drag him and take his back when he sticks out his hand to feel his range, unfortunately he's realized not to do it anymore. I don't have to worry about him taking me down though, I always stay low to the ground and am excellent at timing guillotine attempts for a take down. Thanks in advance!

Well, idk how versed you are in throws but I would advise the use of some. Particularly, (assuming this is no gi) Drop Seoi Nage , Kata Guruma , or Uchi Mata . Close the distance and clinch with him.

Are judo throws on a significantly taller person even possible?! Wouldn't he just stand over me if I even dared tried one? haha. I don't really know how to set someone off balance either in the means for setting up a judo throw. Though I know when the moment is right for one. I've committed judo throws before but I believe they were out of luck. There are times when I simply see the hugest gap of opportunity for a judo throw and I take what I can get, but I'm still a bit nervous and not too confident on being able to commit a judo throw on my terms. I'm so damn nervous of freezing up and possibly breaking the guys arm from standing up right with his arm caught between mine. Then again, I still don't understand the concept of Judo.

By the way the Kata Guruma looks like my average high-c/fireman's carry takedown. I haven't thought about trying it. Thanks a lot for that one dude!

Wouldn't he just stand over me if I even dared tried one? haha. throw work well on taller people. you need to use your strengths and weakness to your advantage. and his to his disadvantage size shouldn't matter. moving in and out of his range is one useful tactic. use speed. loosen him up first with strikes to his thighs. then go for the throw. work on your round house kick when you get that down one good shot will be all you need. i prefer to strike with my toes and end it fast, if i want to be nice i use the ball of my foot for the round house. if you dont have a very strong kick constantly striking the same spot will have thee same effect. Muhammad Ali once said to us that if you constantly hit the shoulder the person wont keep his hands up as height and will slowly drop. its the same principal with striking the thigh or any strike. hitting the same spot over and over again to make it more sensitive.

Haha Whoah slow down there dude. I'm only 15, I only face him in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, not MMA. I understand what you mean since I take light sparring MMA classes (it's the most im allowed to take until I'm 16.) but this is No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu. Sorry, should've been more specific.

The concept of Judo, is to use a larger person's size against them. I find it difficult to throw smaller people. The taller they are usually = easier throw for the simple fact that their center of gravity is much higher than the shorter persons so they are easily off-balanced. Throws like Drop seoi nage (the first gif) are VERY easy to do on a taller person. the initial 'drop' will usually pull the taller man over his own hips thus he will fall flat on his face but since your under him and twisting he flies onto his back. It's very easy, when you drop, drop under his legs (so his crotch would be above your head if he were to remain standing) and twist at the same time while facing the angle you wish to throw. Matt Daquino gives a good run down of it for you. Check it out. (he gives it for an MMA setting but it works just as easily without the knees if you just paw at his lag as if you were trying to grab it. he'll still step back out of instinct) P.S. Kata Guruma = Fireman's carry

Thank you so much for your help avatar! I really appreciate it dude, I'm more than likely gunna roll with him tomorrow.. Or today. I don't know it's midnight haha. Regardless, I'll be sure to go for my fireman's carry and attempt a drop seoi nage.
And Darce Vader. I know, I've considered it before but I know I can take him down, so I may as well. it's just awkward since he's so much taller than me. Either way, I've noticed heavier people are actually pretty easy to submit once on the ground compared to a fast agile person. Heavy weights don't seem to be too technical. I'm just blowing stuff out of my head right now though haha.

big papi? i thought johnnie asked this question. how do you change your name? anyway i find it easier to take down taller guys. idk why it also depends on how skilled they are. it just seems easier to get under their waste and get the double or single or even pick em up to slam em

Papi,
In judo you can throw a much larger guy. i was taught that being smaller gives you the advantage. Since I was the smaller guy I liked hearing that. The only time it was an advantage being small...lol No matter the size you must learn to have confidence in your techniques and know how to make them work for you.
The fireman's carry and kata garume are basically the same. The one on that video is a modifies kata garuma. In judo you are first taught to do that throw standing. If you do it while kneeling it is modified. Some thing just different names like Hadaka Jime in judo is defined as naked strangle. In mma they just say RNC or rear naked choke.

I changed my display name back to Johnnie. I didn't think people actually would even notice haha. I'll keep it this way! But yeah. No matter how hard I try, I just can't commit a damn judo throw! I'll shit brix the day I execute one. Yesterday a good friend of mine came back to my team's gym, and while going against him, he committed a new judo throw he'd been working on. He taught it to me and had me try it a few times while rolling, he told me to try to knock him off balance in the clinch. I don't know the name of this judo throw, but it's where you have an underhook on one side while holding his Tricep on the other, and you use your hips to throw him over. Your opponents' legs practically swing over like a rag doll. I tried doing it against someone smaller than me since they're lighter.. and for the life of me I couldn't knock that little bastard off balance to even begin my judo throw! I just have to face it. I suck ass at judo!
