I know that they apparently came from a same source but why are they so similar?

I think you answered your own question there gunter....the modern father of Hapkido...a Korean native...was a student of the Akido Masters while he was an adopted orphan living in Japan..etc etc so goes the story..I have no idea how true or not this is HOWEVER my masters master is of the opinion that Hapkido (in a certain form/style) is about 3,000 yrs old...Certainly we are never going to argue on this topic but I am sure there is a lot of 'NBationalism' involved in these 'histories'

I'm not experienced in either, having taken Aikido for 3 years and Hapkido informally over my 30 years of Taekwondo.
What I observer is that they are similar because the body works and reacts the same, regardless of what it is doing, and both Hapkido and Aikido take advantage of that.
However, they are philosophically different: Hapkido is unquestionably more brutal than mainstream Aikido, which tends to be more pacifist in nature.
Hapkido also has evolved such that there is significant kicking and compeitions, not unlike Taekwondo or Tomiki -style Aikido.

They are similar is the short answer.
No different than judo and sambo and jiu jitsu being alike. They use many of the same techniques.

They both come from the same original martial art.
