anyone have one? what are you guys opinions on them? i am seriously considering one. and i know that live partners are better, of course. but I want something to practice my throws, my jointlock, and techniques on, when i'm at home. If i get one i'd probably get the bubba dummy, but i'm not 100% sure. any input would be great!

I don't. I'd like to get one though. I think they have some use. It's a great way to practice when you're by yourself and have no partner. But like DVD's/Books/Internet, I think they can be abused, where they are no longer used as supplementary material, and instead become a replacement for the gym and actual training partners. So use it, but keep in mind that its a training aid, not a replacement for gym time.

They are not worth the investment, and Judoforum also had a discussion in regards to this a few years ago. Just like the saying goes when they say, "boards don't hit back", dummies don't resist. Nor can they emulate the same weight shifting that a human body does for throws.
If you want to practice throws, a much better alternative is to use bicycle inner tubes or any other long elastic ropes. You wrap it around a pole or tree and hold both ends like you would for a throwing technique. If done properly, the band will force you to use correct technique to keep yourself from being pulled onto the pole/tree by the elasticity. This is how all professional Judo players in Japan practice when they are by themselves.
It's not a bad tool for some ground technique moves if you wanted to try some theoretical techniques that you thought of, but I doubt you will use it much. Even a partner who is not resisting will be a more practical training than a dummy.

While I agree, I don't think they're completely useless. While resistance is necessary to get good in the long run, sometimes its just useful to try out stuff, whether its theoretical, like you said. It's also useful to run static drills with, to just get better at the movements.

yeah, i had some of the same concerns, i think after summers over though i'll probably go ahead and get one and give you guys my thoughts on it, and if i don't like it, I can always send it back minus the cost of shipping.
