I heard there are like 70 different styles that are each different and have different influences.
The main 5 kwans are-
Song Moo Kwan was influenced by Karate, Hapkido, Kumdo and Northern Shaolin Kung Fu.
Chung Do Kwan was influenced by Taekkyon, Karate & Kung Fu.
Moo Duk Kwan was influenced by Taekkyon, T'ai chi and some other types of Kung Fu & the philosophy of Okinawan Karate from Gichin Funakoshi's books.
Kwon Bop Bu/Chang Moo Kwan was influenced by Ch'uan-fa & Karate.
Yun Moo Kwan/Jidokwan was influenced by Shotokan Karate.
did they all merge and create modern wtf & itf taekwondo or does each kwoon teach a different version?

Well the only good Taekwondo organizations are ITF and WTF.
Taekwondo is a mixture of Karate,Taekkyon and Kung fu.
it was created during the time when the Japanese occupied Korea and they trained the Koreans with Karate and after they left, people started calling it Tae Kwon Do meaning strike or break with Foot and Fists.
Almost the same blocks and punches and strikes like Karate and so are the kicks, but Taekwondo has a bigger kicking move-set. and there is a seperate sport fighting for Taekwondo which only WTF students can apply for.
Both ITF and WTF teaches poomse(kata) patterns which has punches,Blocks,Kicks, other hand strikes and grappling techniques.
and additonally WTF also focus on Sport fighting style which you will see in the Olympics.
the rules are relatively like this
Punches to the chest = 1 point
Kicks to the chest = 1 point
and Kicks to the head = 2 points
and just like Karate,Punches to the face is not allowed.

Although the above may be true, here in New Zealand {as an ex-practitioner of TKD, with many friends who have also dumped the style} that it is predominantly weak, tip tap BS. there are so many rules & regulations that it has choked the true origins/flavour/roots of the style to death. It is for the most part, pretty much hopeless in a real life or full contact sparing situation, & is more show than go. that is why I went into hardcore, full on gut busting MMA styles instead. I've been in martial arts since 1978 & there are very few people down this way, who are fans of TKD in any way & most go into other styles & TKD clubs here tend to be for those who are young, unknowledgeable or inexperienced in martial arts previously & TKD clubs are becoming more rare here as time goes by.

So Taekwondo is basically a Korean adaption of their native Taekkyon with Karate and Kung Fu elements due to the influence that Japan and China played in Korea?
What is the difference between the ITF and WTF organisations? Is it mainly that ITF is based in North Korea or the founder was somewhat of a dictator?

Is it true that when people speak of a WTF style it is actually the style taught by the Kukkiwon organisation and the WTF is actually the sporting organisation?

ATA Taekwondo is officially "Songham Taekwondo" and that makes sense about kwan being the same as ryu/school!
apparently, the term -ryu in Japanese comes from the Chinese character pronounced (in Japanese) ryu (or nagare, in an alternative reading) and it means flowing system or school
