Shouting Kiai is just a translation error that is probably stemming from early western students trying to get their students to put some guts into it and they come out with "That's not going to intimidate/scare anybody". Anybody have any info on how 'Ken' is written and translated? I was lead to believe it meant sword like in Kendo or Kenjutsu but there are a number of strikes that have 'ken' in them like Hiraken tsuki, Oya ubi ippon ken, ryuto ken tsuki, uraken, seiken.
