I've heard this but I have no knowledge of Shootboxing... any inputs on this?

Shootboxing would actually be the Japanese equivalent to MMA, since the rules are almost the same.

shoot fighting, shoot wrestling and shoot boxing are all basically the same, mma is just the latest repackaged version. i believe shoot fighting is the oldest of the 3 or is it 4, i lost count. not including what was before them

I think shoot wrestling was the original and shoot fighting came from it. They all came from Catch wrestling

I thought Shootfighting was just Japan's version of Vale Tudo before they made the Pancration league.

odee I think that Shootfighting just came out of the Shootwrestling scene when they wanted a more competitive and realistic fights as opposed to the pro wrestlinmg scene. this gave birth to promotions like pancrase, shooto, rings etc

Odee and Frasier are both correct. Back when I first started getting into more modern training styles (right after I stopped training in Kung Fu) I was training with a Shooto coach. He was a former LW ISFA Champion. Shooto is pretty much a NHB Vale Tudo tyle of fighting with no gloves that is usually made up of Muay Thai that's been modified with a wider base for the probability of wrestling in Shooto and Catch Wrestling for the grappling. Catch is a pretty cool system, too. I prefer BJJ, but adding Catch (or Catch-as-Catch-can) would probably be beneficial to a lot of BJJ guys as well.

By the way, this was moved because Shooto is not a TMA. I didn't move it to modern since it was an inquiry for the TMA board, so it's in General.

From what I have seen, Catch wrestling is brutal

From what I have seen, Catch wrestling is brutal It's pretty aggressive. I wouldn't say it's got the drop on BJJ or anything, but it's pretty similar to SAMBO in that they both pride themselves on always moving. Different mentality. Catch guys look at guard as being on their back and at a disadvantage so they fight hard for top position (at least in my gym) whereas being in guard is just like standing and squaring off to a lot of BJJ guys. Neither top or bottom is necessarily the better position when it comes to guard in BJJ. In the end, Catch and other grappling styles just have different approaches.

shootboxing is a kickboxing promotion k1 that uses a rules set like muay thai & sanshou but with standing submissions added.
shoot wrestling was an atempt to make pro wrestling real again based on catch wrestling & kickboxing originally but added others and eventually became shoot fighting.
shoot fighting is the japanese equivalent to mma.
japnaese, american & brittish catch wrestling are all different lineages of the same thing like goju ryu, shotokan & kyokushin karate are all styles of karate but different.
I say brittish catch (aka traditional catch) is the best because it's every grappling style in existence all together in one because real catch wrestling isn't supposed to be a style just a competition like mma where grapplers from all over the world competed against each other just like what NAGA, Grapplers Quest, FILA & ADCC do today is what catch wrestling was in the late 1800s & early 1900s.
Many people confuse catch wrestling with lancashire wrestling that started catch.
