Usually I'm of the belief that a uniform doesn't count for much but in the case of a comic like the one I'm attempting to make the main character's attire can sometimes make or break the whole thing.
My first question is what training gear looks the coolest and why?
My second question would be does the soul-reaper outfit from Bleach come from a specific martial art?

It depends on what your main character actually does. Your best bet is to stick with something simple. But I've always thought that Samurai tatami armor looked awesome.
As for the soul reaper outfit, it's influenced entirely by traditional japanese clothing, such as kimonos and haoris (which are worn by the captains). It's not specifically from a certain martial art.

I'm looking for outfits that are easily identifiable but at the same time kind of generic. The Karate/Judo gi is a good example, everyone wearing a gi looks a bit like Ryu but the gi has been used so much that it's kind of boring no matter what colour you make it.
That's why I was looking at the Soul Reaper outfits, they're still pretty generic but they're a bit less common than the gi. Can you think of any other Martial Arts outfit that kind of falls into that description?

Hmm, that's quite a tough one. I get what you're saying about the gi, but to be honest, most traditional martial arts uniforms have a very similar design. Have you considered something like the chinese-style uniform? They're the only uniforms that come to mind that don't look like gis, and I guess they're quite recognizable.

Yeah that's what I was thinking about they have a few designs for chinese martial arts some schools are specialized like the shaolin monks.
Or you can try something like a taekwondo or pankration uniform and I always thought the taekwondo gi was slicker looking than the karate gi for some reason.

It's the black lapels Chef. That and the fact that a lot of them aren't proper, opening jackets like the Karate ones, they're some bonkers kind of plunging v-neck jumper.
You mean the trunks, shin-guards and boots for the Pancration outfit right?
Chinese clothes sound good, they had some pretty outrageous but still kind of street-able clothes.

Especially the neo punk thing they had going on in the late 90s.

odee, there are two main types of TKD uniforms: ITF typically wear the cross-over (looks like Karate gi, except black belts wear black trim). And WTF officially wear the v-neck. The v-neck is new, and is made of ultra-thin material - meant to allow to cool easier and less restricted movement. I like it, but not on me - I don't wear them well. I have a small gut which pulls the sides to the front. As a result, it makes me look like a slob. On a hot summar day, though, the thin WTF uniform comes in real handy - not like the thick canvass ones.

So they're thinner too huh? Cheers for the info Possum. Is there a Korean martial training costume that isn't based around the gi?

have you checked shorinji kempo outfits? they are like a karate gi under a half kimono or something weird I can't quite explain. these taekyeon uniforms look more kung fu influenced than karate/judo influenced.

The black and white one at the top is awesome! It looks like the opposite colour scheme of Orochimaru's clothes in Naruto. The bottom one makes me think of Dragonball Evolution...and that makes me a bit sad.

By sending Goku to High School. By casting Chow Yun Fat as Master Roshi. I think CYF is awesome but he made a half arsed Roshi. By making Yamcha a wuss with bleached hair, no fighting ability and no Pu'ar. By making Piccolo look more like Yoda. By making the Saiyan Ape human sized. By not having an awesome bald midget named Krillin. By making the Kameha wave the be-all-and-end-all.
