I don't understand what they're doing to Judo. A throw, even landing on the stomach used to be a point, now nothing counts unless they're on their back. And now they don't give any time to roll an opponent, if they're on their stomach, they immediately get back up. I hate it when the IOC makes rule changes. They did the same thing to wrestling, shortening the periods and starting the score over for each period.
Onto TKD, I thought the Lopezs were flat. Watching their matches they weren't aggressive at all, just waited and waited and then got scored on. This is in sharp contrast to how Stephen used to fight. Paige's fight against the Brit #1 was a great match. I've shown this match to some of my students, showing them how to be aggressive. I still can't find any videos of Terrence's matches.

i was only able to watch wrestling and boxing. because it wasn't on tv where i am and the online stream wouldn't work. i did happen to catch 1 judo match and it frustrated me how fast they stood them up. I'm really mad i didn't see any taekwondo.

Cheetah, I couldn't agree with you more if you were twice as right. I hated every single TKD match that was shown (not that there were many anyway), and I didn't get the Judo either. I still don't know the new rules, I thought I knew them but everything changed. I don't think it was the IOC - I think it was the Judo federation that did it. I recall I was unhappy with Judo at the last Olympics, I assumed they tried to fix it this time. What they were attempting to do was give points for control. So falling on your back can be accidental or purposeful, the point shouldn't go to nage; and falling on your stomach could only be construed as purposeful - who falls on their stomach by accident. And yet, they award points the other way around, and I don't understand.
I've said it before: the Olympics completely ruined Taekwondo and Judo, and this year, NBC ruined the Olympics. I've no respect for WTF, IOC, or NBC. They all deserve each other.

I know you love Taekwando Possum but why would you subject yourself to watching the Olympic version? Unless it has a major overhall Olympic Taekwando has major faults that are going to continue to produce matches of nothing but two 'fighters' bouncing at one another and trying to psyche each other into attacking first.

odee... LOL! <begin rant> I used to like it because it was sport and thought it was interesting. But I don't anymore. I can't do what they do, and anyway, I've changed my life's priorities. I watch it for nostalgic purposes, and to keep up with the conversation at my dojangs. If I don't keep up, no one will include me in their coffee klatches! :-( I want self-defense, not some Taekwondo-and-a-half training that's so common these days. I know I sound bitter - and really... I am - but I looked at a bunch of schools around me and all they do is cater to the kids and sport. The "ultra serious" are the teens tricking, no different than skateboarders, snow boarders, bikers, capoeiristas, and XMA stylists. So the problem I have isn't so much what's happening in Olympics, it's what's happening in all of the schools around me. I really envy the folks who are in good schools. And besides all that... the TKD fighters in the Olympics just plain sucked. Part of it was NBC. But the finalists (as usual) were very conservative not wanting to take a chance and give up a point. I get it. But when there are more calories burnt from the ref screaming "fight!" I have to think there's got to be something wrong with this. I want women's mud wrasslin'... <end rant>
