This one goes out to anyone but particularly Karateka and ex Karateka. Just purchased a set of sai because the price was too good to pass up and the salesman made a point about many Karate kata translating directly to the sai as an enhancement of the hands rather than an extension. Does anyone recall what these sai kata are? This is more of an interest than any desire to use sai as a weapon.

You can adapt any kata and use your weapon within that kata, but there are kata that are for the weapon. These kata also have applications. There are kata that you use to defend against different weapons. I have been taught that the weapon is an extension of the body.

i think i can move the topic, ill give it a shot
if you dont understand the weapon you wont be able to transfer the empty hand kata into a weapons kata.
a weapon is only an extension of your hand. some weapons transfer nicely into some kata and others don't
the sai have close to 30 or so kata that are specific for sai, but kata like jion, jiin and jitte can also be adapted to sai quite easy.
the arts of kobudo, have almost 50 weapons, only a few of the weapons have kata. most dont have any kata at all.
this is a list of the sai kata i put together over the years Sai Kata Arakaki no Sai Aka Kuniyoshi no Sai Sho Aka Kuniyoshi no Sai Dai Chatan Yara no Sai Sho Chatan Yara no Sai Dai Chihara no Sai Kojo no Sai Kusanku no Sai Kyan no Sai (Ananku) Hama Higa no Sai Hama Goten no Sai Hanta Gawa no Sai (Hantaguwa?) Sai does translate a lot easier than most weapons. you have two, you can basically punch with them etc. certain moves are definitely very similar. For example the combination of gedan berai with a jodan uke is used in multiple kata for both sai and unarmed.
One unarmed kata i have done with sai is fukugata ni and that was a smooth transition.
