Don't stay away from martial arts, just stay away from bad instructors. You don't want to end up like the Cobra Kai.

That is an excellent point. Stay away from anything run by Masaaki Hatsumi.

I agree with rikashiku, don't stay away from any styles just stay away from bad teachers of any style.
even if there were a best style idiots would still teach it badly.

I agree with the idea of don't stay away from styles, stay away from teachers.
Though I will say that in my experience and from the martial arts climate where I grew up at, I am immediately wary about Tae Kwan Do and any Karate other than full contact. Where I lived almost everyone of them were McDojo's. I've sparred some McDojo black belts and it wasn't hard at all, even before I started taking fighting and training serious.

I think there's a bit too much put into what is the really the worst martial arts... really has more to do with the instructor. But i would say just from my experience stay away from pure sport karate (WKF) or sport taekwondo. Nothing wrong with going to some tournaments but i would stay away from the those pure sport schools.
Also IMO if an MA is serious about self defense they should train some spontaneous/resistance self defense drills. I've met and spared with a few guys i wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley, but pull a wooden knife on them in training and they don't look too flash.

I really have no issue with a sport aspect being introduced into a martial art, my problem is when that sport is bubble wrapped.

I think every martial art deserves a chance at least due to the fact that styles and instructors are different. Honestly though, Ninjutsu is really getting to that point of becoming flawed all together.
Correct me if I'm wrong but there is only one place in Noda City I believe that is qualified to teach real Ninjutsu.
