That ones another ambiguous art, because it combines old technique with modern technique. If your asking because you want to know which section to post questions about Sanshou, you could post it in either traditional or modern, I don't think you could go wrong. But I'd probably post in modern.

No, I just wanted to know what people think. Thanks for your response. I'm still learning how to get around this place!

It's about as traditional as modern Muay Thai.

depends on how you define traditional I guess because I see it as modern but the styles it uses are traditional so it's more like doing the traditional stuff in a new format.
my only real experience from sanshou was in my wing chun school we did it as sparring along with modern wushu as exercise but wing chun was the style it's kinda complicated but in the end sanshou wasn't our style just our sparring.

Depends. Is it the official Sanshou sport taught in China that is like Muay Thai with takedowns? Then modern. Is it the Sanshou applications (sparring as opposed to forms or Talou) of traditional Chinese martial arts like Tai Chi Chuan or Hung Gar? Then traditional. There is a difference.

Muay Thai contains throws and takedowns as well, San Shou has a stronger focus on it though. They're actually quite similar, but each with their own unique flavor.

They are alike and both have their traditional schools and sport side.
