As most everyone here already knows I'm a big believer in application. I believe that the amount of time you've spent applying your technique on resisting opponents is directly related to how you perform as a fighter.
A friend in the army challenged me with this little equation to determine how much time I'd spent ACTUALLY sparring, not kata, not drills, not basics or bagwork and not physical conditioning.
SPARRING.
I used my Kyokushin time as my level because it had the supposedly round number of ten years and was a lot easier to calculate than the random numbers we do in the gym.
While I was practicing Kyokushin I trained five nights a week in two hour classes that normally racked up a solid half-hour of sparring per night.
So here is the equation.
.5 of an hour times five equals 2.5 hours per week
2.5 hours per week times 52 weeks equals 130 hours in a year.
130 hours in a year times ten years is 1300 hours.
1300 hours divided by twenty-four hours in a day is 54 days meaning over ten years I spent roughly 54 days actually sparring (you can take out public holidays and days I was sick if you want, I'll just add in tournaments and sparring seminars and gradings to come out with a slightly bigger number anyway).
Here's the kicker.
He does Karate as a 'sport' in the military, combine that with his military training and he gets 25 hours a week, which knocks my piddly number over. Every. Damn. YEAR.
So, anyone else want to see where they stack up? I'd be interested to hear the kind of sparring time people are getting when they practice.
