Carbohydrate them self aren't bad and are actually required. Most likely when people say "carbs are bad" they are referring to Simple Carbohydrate ( Cake, Candy, sugar, soda and etc. ). Which are basically "empty calories". You don't need to exile them from your life but it's of course better the less you have of them. Basically what you want is Complex Carbohydrate rather then Simple Carbohydrate because Complex Carbohydrate are formed up of more then a one or two base sugars and as a result they are rich in nutrients. If you want a complete read on them I suggest you check here for more information.

they're not. this is a common fallacy of the Atkin's Diet for weight LOSS. for people like me who want to GAIN weight I virtually overdose on carbs daily. carbs are basically complex sugars which give you energy; energy that should be used to fuel a solid workout. like calories however, if you intake too many, they will store and you will gain weight (usually fat if you're not active and using the energy they give to workout)

Carbs are not bad, but everything should be balanced. For weight loss, as Airbender points out, it's good to limit, but not completely eliminate, carbohydrate intake. The types of carbs are also a big piece of the equation as lostchild mentioned. Another type I would recommend looking into is Glutenous carbs. A lot of people hear about how bad Gluten is nowadays and have no idea why. Well, Gluten is basically wheat products. People don't realize this but roughly 95% of the people on this planet can't even properly digest gluten. Limiting gluten can seriously help in maintaining high energy levels and losing weight.
This is another note that's unrelated, but roughly 60 percent of people can't digest dairy products properly either, and those who CAN are actually WEAKENING their bones by consuming dairy in the first place. Lactose can only be broken down by phosphate and the only source of phosphate in your body is in your bones, so your bones break down to digest the lactose and then you piss out the calcium the milk industry WANTS you to think you're actually being nourished by.
Honestly, though, I still partake in gluten and dairy. That said, I LIMIT THEM quite a bit. I supplement coconut milk for cows milk, which contains 50% more calcium than milk anyway. I consume whey and casein protein that come from cows milk, but rotated with good calcium sources to negate the negative effects (there's not as much lactose remaining in whey or casein anyway). Plus, I believe the ticket to making any diet work is cheating. Nobody should completely eliminate cheeseburgers forever, that just isn't human.
I'm kind of ranting, but basically moderation is key. I MOSTLY stay away from dairy and gluten but occasionally partake (except straight up milk, which I simply find disgusting to begin with).
