I see so many kids and teenagers, hell even grown people, saying they want to pursue their dreams of fighting in the UFC. I believe in shooting for your goals, but I'm also a realistic person, in case some of you aren't aware. I believe that if these kids work hard enough, they can have successful amateur and pro careers, but fighting in the UFC is just too unrealistic. I'll tell them that they have a better chance of getting into the NFL, because there are way more spots open there. In the UFC you have around 400 spots, and even now its downsizing. 400 spots in one of the fastest growing sports in the world. The chances of making it into that are astronomical. The fact is there are thousands upon thousands of hungry, skilled guys out there, that won't be making it into the UFC themselves. It isn't about how good you are anymore. It's about who you know, and the opportunities presented to you.
Am I wrong to discourage people from pursuing this? I feel like I'm obligated to break it to them, since I know the business better than they do, and they may not understand what saying you want to fight in the UFC, truly means.

I don't think so. Maybe just encourage them in their training and ambitions but explain that getting into the UFC is very difficult and they should understand that. Also suggest other organisations like Bellator and the Asian ones like One FC, Shooto and Pancrase if they fail to get into the UFC.

I think most of them need the reality check. If someone had what it took they would do it regardless of what you said or they wouldn't care enough about your opinion to ask in the first place.

I agree that some of them need a reality check. I train with a couple of guys who think they can knock Jon Jones out quickly. I mean they are both about 70kg and not very good strikers........some people are delusional

I think it's wrong to completely to tell them to give up but they need to know the truth that few make it and it's not a easy path to take. Odds are when your older you'll be working a job to keep a place to live and eat while training for MMA and hoping to get some matches. It's far from a "easy" path and most of the time it's unforgiving and ruthless.
It's the same with musicians or maybe even artists. Your going to be working (or attending school while working) and at the same time trying to "train" your skill (fighting, music or whatever it may be) that also cost money.

I think if people are smart about pursuing things like fame and fortune, meaning they're going to college, while they're following these dreams, then theres absolutely nothing wrong with it. But if you're putting all your eggs in one basket, in ANY situation, doesn't matter if its college, or pursuing the UFC, then you fucked up.

Actually it's more risky than Musicians or artists. There are no numerical limits on musicians and artist numbers plus musicians and artists tend not to wind up on the injured list when things don't go according to plan.

Everyone has dreams to pursue something but not all will see their dreams become realities. I'm not saying that these people don't have a chance. Some people just need a reality check, getting into UFC is harder than getting into most professional sports.
UFC fighters usually have day jobs as well so either way these UFC pursuers should be getting an education at the same time while training.

They just need to be realistic with it, hell becoming a professional mma fighter is something I dream to be but I'm realistic with it, I have one good gym near me and near me is an hour an a half away with no money no car and I'm 16. Chances are slim for me at the moment but I won't give up because its something I truly want to do, I even had an argument with someone recently with them saying why would I want to do something that doesn't pay as much as NFL and gets me punched in the face, and I just told them I'd rather do something I love than make more money. I found some money to take up wrestling at my school to gain towards my goal but I do understand my actual chances of ever becoming a fighter.

I think it depends, me personally I get motivated by people telling me i CANT do something because I wanna prove them wrong more then anything. I don't believe anything is wrong with trying and there has been people who started around age 17+ and become very good top fighters. Personally I would encourage them, but I would encourage them to be different from the rest of the fighters AKA No trash talking or sizing up, don't be the fighter with the biggest mouth be the fighter with the biggest fist.

Even so, the amount of fighters that make it to the UFC is so little. Sure they can train their hardest but sometimes it's just not enough and they should be ready for disappointment.
Once you get in the UFC, there's also the labor of staying in as well.
