I've believed for a long time that media is one of the reasons that crappy schools can continue to exist. Be it television, movies, youtube or comic books so I want to hear from you guys.
What springs to mind when you're given the names of martial arts?
Aikido - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - Judo - Budo Taijutsu - Karate - Jujutsu - Krav Maga - Muay Thai - Tai Chi - Ninjitsu - Kenpo - Kempo - Kickboxing - Collegate Wrestling - Hapkido - Taekwondo - Sambo - Boxing - Street Fighting - Silat - Escrima - Savate - Muay Boran - Dutch Kickboxing - Pancrase - MMA - Capoeria - Kung Fu - Wushu -
There's no right or wrong answer I just want to know what goes on in heads when names are mentioned.

Aikido - Standing arm locks. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - Ne Waza/Ground Work Judo - Throws (really these top 3 can complement each other a lot) Budo Taijutsu - Fraudulent crap Karate - Discipline. Pretty generic. I actually think Karate's pretty badass when it's trained hard. Jujutsu - I concur with the samurai thing. Krav Maga - Dirty tricks. Muay Thai - PAIN. Bruised shins with bumps and occasional goose eggs. I don't have as much an image in my head based on media as I do based on what I've put up with. Tai Chi - Wrestling. I did some while I did Long Fist Kung Fu. Ninjitsu - Also fraudulent crap Kenpo - The great debate Kempo - Over the M or N... Kickboxing - K1 comes to mind Collegate Wrestling - lulz, leotards and oil... Hapkido - My dad did Hapkido in the past. Reminds me of his old stories. Taekwondo - ATA. I did some time with them and it always takes me back to that. It was terrible. I have sparred with a guy that did good TKD though. Sambo - I sent some messages back and forth with Steve Koepfer for a while and he had some awesome things to say. I also think of Fedor. Boxing - Boxing. Seriously, not sure what else I'm supposed to be associating. Street Fighting - KIMBO SLICE! Kimbo is a funny dude. Silat - Karambits. Sweet blades, I always wanted one. Escrima - Sticks. Savate - French people kicking each other with shoes on. Muay Boran - Similar to Muay Thai, not as tough a workout and not as natural or simple. I think more modern Muay Thai is more effective, so did my Kru who did both, but for some reason people think Muay Boran = Teh r34l d34l!!! Dutch Kickboxing - Muay Thai with better hands. Really, the Thai have never stressed hands enough. Pancrase - Bas Rutten. MMA - Fedor again. That tub of lard is the reason I first started to like MMA in the first place. Capoeria - Dancing and wasted energy. Looks like a great workout if you like looking like a dumb ass. Kung Fu - This is the only martial art that has ever pushed me so hard I threw up. Seriously, people discount Kung Fu as a conditioning style too much. Good Kung Fu is awesome, although I'd consider it more a lifestyle than a fighting style. Wushu - Just another face of Kung Fu meant more for display purposes.

It's basically TKD + Aikido. It's an oversimplification to say so, but in essence you could do both and get VERY close to what Hapkido is. If you have interest in either or both of those styles, check it out. I've studied the other two but I don't have any interest in going back to either.

You don't think Hapkido or the other two are practical? I don't think they're AS practical as many other options. I don't think they're useless either.
