So everyone's seen a situation where two people are right in each others' faces ready to knock the other person's head off.
In a situation like this do you think a preemptive strike is appropriate in self defense if you know they are going to hit you at some point? Or is it only okay to defend yourself once they have physically tried to attack you?
Self defense experts say preemptive strikes are important in some cases, other's say otherwise. What are your opinions on this?

I've got no real issue with a preemptive strike. If you know it's going to go south anyway best to get the first shot in. Think of all the self defense scenarios where you don't even know you're in a fight until after you've been hit. If you see a fight coming take the offensive and smack them first. I'm a bit ashamed to admit it but if I know a situation is brewing into a fight I'm more likely to provoke it, for two reasons. 1. I know things are going to get messy anyway so it's better if I get the say in how soon the hitting starts, if you provoke it you can predict it enough to defend yourself from the initial flurry plus the longer it drags out the longer you stay tense and start second guessing what might happen. 2. Letting a shouting match continue can sometimes make things worse because others begin to take sides and rather than just having two people duking it out in what should be a quick flurry with a definite end you're allowing the possibility of an all in brawl.
That said I work in a club so my situation would be different to a club-goer or an assault, I have to think about liability and can't be the first person swinging.

A preemptive strike is often vital for self defense. If you are in the situation where you think self defense is needed, then you need to strike first or face injury or death. He/She who strikes first will win most times. Geoff Thompson is a world renowened self defense writer from England. He has written a lot about the preemptive strike. Check him out and read what he has wisely written. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoff_Thompson_(writer)Also check out 'the fence', an excellent self defense posture and stance that can quickly lead to the preemptive strike.

In self-defense, anything goes. Legally and ethically, it falls in the wrong category. It's about deciding whether you're willing to sacrifice your ethics and legal standing to survive a potentially deadly situation. Most would opt to survive and deal with the consequences later, and that's where I fall into.

I would be really careful about preemptive strikes just because a lot of times confrontations are just two people staring each other down and not actually fighting (yet). It takes an instigator to start the fight and by throwing a preemptive strike you could potentially be seen as the instigator if law enforcement gets involved.

If a weapon is present, do whatever it takes. If you're dishing out the first hit in a fist fight, it's not anything goes. If you choke somebody to death because you thought they were going to hit you, then you're an idiot and you deserve imprisonment.

I'm pretty sure most places allow REASONABLE force in a self defense situation, so not everything goes. If you're kicking the guy on the ground when he's clearly incapacitated it can be viewed as assault even if he did instigate the fight.
Glutton, you had a good example as well.
