When I was a wee lad, I always dreamed of becoming a professional boxer. I idolized Sugar Ray Robinson and Rocky Marciano and I'd do as many push-ups and sit ups as I could so I'd be fit enough when I joined a boxing gym.
Finally, I joined such a gym and learned from Day 1 that getting hit in the face stings like a bitch. But did that stop me? Hell no! I trained and trained, hoping that one day, I'd get the glory that came with being a world champion.
However, there were professionals in my gym who'd train twice as long as anybody else. However, they never made it. They'd get the crap beaten out of them by fighters twice as talented as them. They became journeymen, point-getters, people who lived for the sake of honor in the ring but instead helped others to their goals instead.
It was after this that I realized that being a fighter, MMA or boxing, was a hard life. You need talent, and there's not very many ways you can be sure that your talent is world-class potential. And even then, the prospects of become a world champion is extremely slim because of many different factors.
Not trying to be an arrogant asshole, but I'm not exactly a bad boxer. All of my wins have been from knockouts and my coach trains me for free, because he thinks I can go far. I'd grappled with the idea of going pro for years, but I finally decided that going pro wasn't my fate. It'll be a decision that I may die regretting, though.
That sums up my reasons for not going pro. To all the Mixed Martial Artists, wrestlers, or Boxers in this forum, have you ever considered trying to take on the world? If you have, what keeps you going, and have you ever regretted your decision? If not, what were your reasons for not going pro?
