I have heard it a few times over the years, in your own words is that still a statement that could be use nowadays? because martial arts has changed so much over the last couple of decades and so have peoples mindsets and attitudes.

To be honest that's bullshit (or mostly). Martial arts don't make a person better, they can teach the values that make a better person but for a person to become "better" it is up to them and them alone.
