You will hear the advantage is that you will build speed and strength.
The disadvantage is the damage you are causing your body and joints.

JWbulldogs already nailed it.
If you want a substitute for weights so your joints are not damaged, try punching with resistance bands.

Its bad for u cos punching with weights puts downwards pressure on ur arms. Which doesn't rly helpp u at all. If u were gonna punch with weights ud have to lye on ur back and punch up towards the sky so it resists in the proper direction to benefit u. Otherwise just unnecessary tension in ur shoulders

They help you remember to keep your guard up and the extra mass requires more effort to begin acceleration. That's about it. If you want both explosive and driving power you'd be better off doing jumping push-ups.

Would the answer be different if I punched with those weighted sleeves and gloves? Like that and filled with sand

youxia -
punch without any weights. good punches come from technique, not big muscles.

I heard punching with wrist weights like that is really hard on your joints and can cause long term damage.
When I use wrist weights I don't punch with them. I only use them to make it harder to keep my hands up with doing kicking practice.

I'm not planning on doing this but would be interested to know from anybody with experience what the effects are on your speed from just practicing with the heavier boxing type gloves.

As long as you're only ever using them with a punching bag you might get some good results.
