Some awesome knife videos there.
I carry a Fenix PD30+, and working security I wore a Surefire because of the nice holster. Strobing someone before attacking is AWESOME tool. I don't care so much about the striking bezel and all that, unless it ever comes to where I need it, it also works great as weight in your hand for punches.
Most of the time I would strobe, and be around a guys neck and snatching him back before he knew it... I have used Taclights A TON, and am a huge fan of them for self defense.
Knowing other people's body language is incredibly important as mentioned.
There is a fine line of altertness to maintain before you essentially become fatigued to it, no matter how much you train. Random unpatterned checks, changing body posture as people approach you also helpful.

I've studied Body language a bit and it makes sense but I kinda disagree with the OP. When i see someone with a hoodie, closed in among himself i think this... (eg: Trayvon Martin) Obvious exception is if you're dressed like this...

I think "The Fence" stance and moves taught by Geoff Thompson are GREAT and all martial artists and people should be aware of it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6OJnZG3joAI cannot praise this enough. And his other videos are great for the mental side of fights and body language.
