well.. which one? Kneebar, Heel Hook, Toe Hold, Ankle Lock etc? for lower leg locks there's a very basic technique called "putting the boot on" where you extend your leg and flex all the muscles and angle your toes upward. it stiffens the leg and makes it virtually impossible to attack the lower leg eg; ankle, foot etc. However, this is only a temporary solution and simply buys you time to roll out or find some other way out. but as all grapplers know, 5 seconds of holding off a submission can alter the whole fight..

The only real defense against a hold or joint lock is avoiding or preventing it from being completed and countering. Unless the person using the technique made a mistake, you shouldn't be able to get out of it. It wouldn't be much of a technique if there was a way to get out of it now would it?

It wouldn't be much of a technique if there was a way to get out of it now would it? There's MANY escapes to a completed triangle, armbar, Americana, arm-triangle, ankle lock, etc. it goes on and on. You're trying to tell me those aren't considered technique based submissions? There's a counter to everything, and like my instructor always says, it's hardly ever the 1st or 2nd counter, but the third. Just how I escaped a close Armbar at a tourney yesterday. I tried doing a pendulum to sweep him, he posted his hand and prevented it. A counter to my counter, I tried pushing his leg down so I could jump into his guard, he came closer to yanking my arm out of my little hand hold. I had my vulnerable hand on my bicep and my free hand under his thigh. He finally yanked it out, I turned my hand upwards and did the simpsons walk out of that Armbar, landed in side control, took mount and caught HIM in an Armbar. The point is, there's a counter to everything, but don't rely on just one counter. Be ready to pull off a series of escapes/counters on YOUR terms. Don't wait for the last second to do something.
