It's usually hard to motivate myself when I'm first starting out on something. Like a diet or whatever. But after I start seeing some success, then my motivation starts increasing. And then it gets to the point, where I just want to push myself, and I won't accept anything less than what I've given in the past. So my recommendation, build up some success, and it just gets easier. And its cool, because when you fail, it only pushes you harder man. You feel so disappointed in yourself, that you won't accept anything less the next time.

I psyche myself up by watching others. I own several supplementary DVDs in Judo, which gets me worked up to hit the tatami. I also like watching weight lifting videos before I go to the gym for weight training. The hardest activity to get myself motivated for is running. I just suck it up and do it, because I know that I won't regret it once I finish.
It's also a mindset that you will have to reach, where you get to the point that continue to hold a high standard for yourself, and refuse anything less. I know I feel guilty when I have one of those days where I couldn't push out that one extra lap. That itself motivates me sometimes, as I work even harder the next day to make up for my weakness on the previous day.
