Are the forms like the Chen Old Frame form in Chen style of Tai Chi Chuan similiar to the katas in Karate?
I mean are they used to teach the essence of the style?
Do the forms have applications to them like the bunkai and oyo in Karate katas?

Just some background on my training, I started 6 months ago.
I haven't moved past learning the movements in the slow form. Haven't started the fast form and applications of the forms yet. In the future will come the pushing hands, free hands and weapons forms as well as the fast forms.

Depends on the Tai Chi school. If you're doing a community hall Tai Chi yes they do have practical application but you will rarely be taught them. If you do a combatative Tai Chi then yes you will likely learn and practice them. It all depends on the school.

Thanks to youxia for posting some videos using taiji in their sparring.
There are always applications in the forms, and in every single movement.
The reason you are learning the form first, as I am sure is along with your silk reeling, and standing post that you should be doing, is for you to reprogram the way your body moves.
Taijiquan along with a few other internal systems are drastically different than the external arts of much karate, judo, jiujitsu, other kung fu, etc. The only way to really understand it, is to feel it, and the only way to feel it, is to find somebody who is genuine and have them show you.
This reprogramming of your body's mechanics will take you some time, so don't be upset, and don't quit. You'll be very surprised once you are able to make the physical connections, and your eyes will be opened to an entirely new and different world.

Even though I did Baguazhang with a little influence of Xingyiquan for years and prefered it over Taijiquan, I still love Taijiquan...
