I'm all about achieving dominant position from shitty ass positions. Subs are nice and all, but to me its all about transferring to new positions from new different places. I think thats what separates a good jiu jitsu fighter from a great jiu jitsu fighter. These kids nowadays only want to learn subs, but aren't willing to do the work necessary to get into position to perform those subs.
And don't forget, it's always position before submission. If you try to submit someone before achieving position, you're going to have a bad time.
What about you guys? I'm sure most of you guys will say either a mix or mostly submission game.

position before submission always. any coach that doesn't teach that is bugging. im more of a position guy because when i started i was a fatass and i knew how to use my fat properly. and as a i lost weight i continued to know how to use my weight properly. also since i was a fatass it was hard to get my guard good it was hard throw my legs up for sub in time. i slowly got better. i used to teach beginner classes at my gym kids would come in on there first day asking how to do any armbar. i would laugh.

well, as the annoying guy who always rants about Judo, I feel it's my duty to say that in Judo one can win by pinning which is essentially gain dominant position and maintain it. therefore i prefer to be on top because it's more beneficial and because 90% of my bottom game is sweep orientated. i like to transition from sweep to sweep to sweep like BJJ guys do with triangle/armbar/omoplata/etc

You're not the annoying guy at all. You're one of the most knowledgeable members here, at least moreso than me. Anyways, yeah my game is heavily sweep oriented. Thats why I guess I can say I lost my last tournament. I was a dumbass that got off the mount, just so I could work some open guard/sweep stuff, and it f*cked me over. But I love sweeps and open guard. So maybe at heart I'm a judo guy

I'm a submission guy I try to be good at every position so I can pull a sub off.
Trying to get better position can take time which I don't have because I could be getting killed or something lol

I think position matters more than anything, it helps lead to submissions, and in reality is what gives you the advantage in a real confrontation. Waiting around for a submission can be costly (ask Royce Gracie vs. Kimo) add in weapons, and you best bet is to be able to control an opponent while minimize their ability to cause you damage, and that is what dominant position is about.
I find getting position is easier than going for submissions, especially when many submissions require two on one, and other grips in which you have a limited amount of time to pull off. A skilled grappler vs. normal person is going to end up in a dominant position in seconds, a sweep, just simply falling or controlling the takedown puts you in a dominant position.
There is a reason you hear position before submission, because with dominant position all things are possible, and it offers you the most protection.
Just my two cents.
