Can Judo and BJJ students claim Jigoro Kano as their founder? Or in BJJ, the original founder as opposed to the Gracies?

Depends entirely on who you talk to. A lot of people will say Kano, others will say the Gracies. However, there is a Gracie branch that stems from a cousin who has the Gracie sirname and had some major legal issues with his relatives, they took him to court for teaching Gracie Jiu-jitsu without their blessing/cut court ruled that since Gracie is his sirname he can still use it but he can't use the triangle 'G' I bet he'd trace his roots right back to Kano.
