Watching the Irish fighting techniques video I am a little confused. Is the difference between the axe and hammer punches that the axe punch is similar (the bottom of the fist and forearm) but you attack with it whilst the hammer punch is a counter or you hit back after missing etc?

Does anyone consider Classical Pugilism (and its other name Bare-Knuckle Boxing) a traditional martial art?
I think Classical Pugilism is to Boxing what Jiujitsu is to Judo.
or
Traditional Karate to Sport Karate Kung Fu to competition Wushu Military Taekwondo to WTF Taekwondo etc
Thoughts?

I added your posts man I figured they were meant to go toagther lol
And I more consider it what self defence judo is to the sport of judo.
The self defence style has lots of striking and ground fighting but the sport doesn't and 99% of the people that know judo are athletes who have no use for much of the self defence style because it can't help them win trophies so they only learn whats allowed in the sport.
About 1-5% learn real judo thats jujutsu made from war killing art to civilian self defence art.
many styles have that and you can say sanshou and modern wushu are 2 opposite sport aspects of traditional kung fu.
it was a complete system these vids mostly show it's hand work but wrestling & boxing were part of the same style so whatever regional style a wrestler knew was how he grappled in a fight since ground fighting was commonplace until broughtons rules

It is true that Pugilism did have grappling, wrestling, strikes other than punches like elbows and kicks, trips, sweeps and ground fighting

@fraiser- It's confusing... It looks like the axe is to the inside and the hammer is to the outside.
outside as in left hand goes left and right hand goes right
inside as in left hand goes right and right hand goes left
he also adds the chop to the axe hand at 14 when he does it downwards to the nose but technically he is right it's just a variation I never thought of that lol
