I started this thread for anyone who is interested in Classical Pugilism also known as Bare-Knuckle boxing. Here's my personal collection of manuals I have been training with over the past few years alongside my training if anyone's looking for an interesting read- www.scribd.com/collections/3556512/Bare-Knuckle-Boxing-Classical-PugilismDoes anyone else know anything about old school boxing or have any questions? Very cool. I'm all for keeping the old ways of doing things alive. Thanks for the time and effort you put into this.

These aren't exactly the same as the old school boxers did but more of an interpretation by experienced martial artists from modern boxing & other styles based on original sources from the classical boxing period.
bare knuckle boxing training with jiu jitsu video from WW1
Dermot McGrath on his version of Irish Bare-Knuckle Boxing which is influenced by modern Irish Bare-Knuckle Boxing.
Carl Cestari teaches Boxing and has lineage is directly linked to Robert Fitzsimmons.
Here's Mark Hatmakers old school dirty boxing videos

I wonder if it's the western thinking that considers something useless unless it's current or somehow mystical. It's not that we never had martial arts but we've really never bothered preserving them. Which I find kind of amusing considering our love of collecting historical junk.

we preserved them with the english meisters of defence in the 1700s but the italian school of fencing destroyed that and boxing was raped by every rule change lol so we still have it but it's just different... very different!
but your right it's weird we do stuff like that

Do you think there is any similarity or connection between bare-knuckle boxing/pugilism and Wing Chun?

yeah I've noticed a lot of similarities.
the reason why I think that is because they are highly scientific and if you use science properly you should always come up with the same answer.
an examples is math and 4 + 4 is 8
also in chemistry mixing baking soda and vinegar will always make it react unless you add something else.
So far I've found the stance, the chain punches, emphases on straight lines, centre line theory, vital target striking, continuous attacks, lead hand guardian arm, lead hand is the main punching hand, vertical fist punching & clinch fighting.
I think I found trapping but the text is old english sounding and confusing so I'm going to have go over it few more times.
they also move the hand first and the body afte it like wing chun does with their hammer & nail concept but they also used another type of lunging power.
I think I also found fa jing in a description of a jab where it says "thrust your hand forward as fast as you can like the yanks idea of greased lighting for maximum effect" or something along those lines and if you know fa jing it's explosive energy which explains how they can get good knockout power with their front hand by only punching a few inches b because it was often almost fully extended much like wing chun.
I'm going to be updating this section with some more stuff so check it out once in a while if it interests you & I'm compiling sources too so it might take a bit for somethings.

It's amazing what MMA is bringing back out of the woodwork "Derty Boxing" to sling the Irish broag at it.

All of this boxing history should probably be merged, don't you think? I understand that the threads have different focuses, but they're still boxing.

yeah I moved it but I won't add ancient since Greek Pygmachia & Brittish Pugilism are two different styles even if they are related.

That they are. I wonder if the Irish really do have a genetic liking to fighting or if that's all just hearsay?
