Is Systema a legit martial art? Or is it a new fad?
Is its history true or marketing?

I don't think fad is the right word. Systema has been around for a while and has always had the same kind of trickling recognition that it has now. On top of that the few Systema practitioners that I've spoken to say some of the higher-ups still refer to it as Judo.

They refer to it as Judo? That is really strange. I could understand Sambo but Systema......interesting

Meh, it's like Krav Maga, based off other martial arts and kind of subject to flavouring from the person teaching it. What I've been told is there is a lot of Judo heritage in there.

So its like Krav Maga?
Is the history of Systema being a traditional martial art with a heritage back to the medieval age true? Or is it a recent construction like Sambo? Or based on internal Chinese martial arts?

No idea. What I know came from conversation, I've never really been interested enough to look deeper into it.

Practiced a year in Systema. Its a system created about 700 years ago, or older. It didn't become a public martial arts system until World War 2, wich the martial art was taught by Stalins Eagles. A few friends of mine, former spetsnaz, explained that the martial art is very similar to what you see in Aikido and classical Karate, but its Russian. There are two types of Systema. The Military Systema and Ryabkos Systema which is what I learned.
Ryabkos Systema is based originally on the military version with some additions from more eastern martial arts. Sonny told me that the new Systema is less about killing your enemy and more about disabling them.
From what I was taught, Systems lineage is very old. A force of 400 Druzhina(Russian version of Huskarl) were specifically trained in a martial art in which the name is translated to 'Combat System' but shortened to 'The System'. There are other forces of Druzhina who also practice a martial art called Combat System in history that became famous in their battlefield. I'm having trouble remembering this one group, I think they served a man named Alexander or something.

Id much rather practice Systema over Krav Maga from what I've seen of both.
