What is your preffered strategy for competition? Do you prefer to win on points or by a finish? Why? Personally I always go for the submission.

I ALWAYS go for the sub but I still win on points going for the sub & it depends on the rules of said tourney.
if hard throws are allowed I go for a knockout throw & follow up with a submission if it fails.
if hard throws are illegal I go for a soft throw that leads into a submission when I land like most judo throws have an arm lock follow up after an arm throw.
if I can't get a throw then I try the hooking game but it's really complicated at the higher levels and you have to be setting up 2 or 3 submissions at a time so if one is countered you can use the other 2.
rules play a big role though and if neck cranks & leg locks are legal they are my main subs & I use arm locks to force new positions to my advantage to set up a neck crank or leg lock because people fight thought broken arms all the time but no one fights through a twisted neck & it always makes people tap.
arm locks people can fight through the pain & chokes people can wake up and say nothing happened but neck cranks break your neck & leg locks break your legs so there is no fighting through them because you can't walk with a broken leg and you can't do much of anything with a broken neck lol
I'm also a fan of muli tier submissions like the guillotine choke can be a choke, neck crank or both together depending on how you use it making it even harder to resist than if it were just a choke or crank.

It's probably part of the reason I'm not so great at grappling but I believe a points win isn't a proper victory. A points win means you weren't good enough to finish the job. Personally I prefer chokes in a full grappling format because they tend not to leave permenant damage, if I intend to break a person or leave an impact that will make them remember me and the defeat I gave them striking tends to be my preferred method.

odeeInteresting, I agree finishing an opponents better but do you think points can ever be a real victory? I feel if i get dominated by my opponent the whole match that I lost fair and square, even if couldn't finish me.

I count my losses as losses regardless of how they came about. I'm just never happy with a points victory.

In catch tournaments they don't score points and you can't pull guard either because you get counted as pinned if you can't sweep in under 3 seconds. I don't like to go for pins I prefer subs and painful rides like the ball & chain ride with your knee in the back of your opponents knee cap so they cant move their legs and it hurts like hell & it makes sense why most people don't like rolling with me now lol odee- I don't like to hurt them either that's why I do crazy moves because your more likely to tap from your neck breaking than your arm breaking so I don't like armbars because people let their arms break and fight on and I don't want to keep cranking on their broken arm and mangle it because I tend to focus on a limb and keep hurting it and if they don't tap when it's broken I'll keep going because I don't know it's broken always.
