So as some of you may know, I'm applying for the Police Academy this summer, for the fall academy. My biggest obstacle is the 1.5 mile run that I have to make in 13 minutes. At one point, 12 minutes was just my mile time. So I gotta step my game up just to get back to that point, where I can run the whole mile, and then work up to a mile and a half.
Any tips? I've been running almost everyday and have been making some improvements. I'd like to hear what some of you guys think.

Work on your leg strength. But don't make your legs too bulky. A 12 minute mile is very slow considering. Some people can walk a mile in 15mins. Although the average is about 20 mins
That reminds me I need to work on my cardio more as well

Also getting a running partner who is better than you will give you big improvements. My experience is its pretty easy to give up before you need to if its just yourself

Great pointers shurite. I like the arm one, that maybe why my back hurts after, because it says it makes your upper chest work harder. I'll try the side to side motion and see if it helps.
Kokoro. My legs have gotten pretty toned from just running alone, but I'll see if I can do some leg workouts. And how on God's green earth can someone walk a mile in 15 minutes. Are they fucking power walking??

I usually run 3km (roughly 1.86 miles) at least once or twice a week to just keep cardio strong. I started off doing about 2km about 8 months ago and it was pretty hard. Right now I can do 3k without too much difficulty, so I really think it just takes the effort and time for you to build that cardio.
When I run I try to keep my back straight as possible and keep my arms moving. I also try to find a regular breathing pattern which I find helps a lot. In through your nose and out your mouth at a constant pace.
