I have been watching the Judo Asian championships on TV here in Australia. It has been a number of years since I trained in Judo and am VERY confused by the new rules and sporting side.
My questions and misunderstanding are-
1. Where has the ground aspect (Katame-waza) gone? Once they went to the ground they were basically stood straight back up? Where are the pins etc? There was almost nothing on the ground.
2. A lot of penalties for not being active enough.
3. Very little use of the feet and any throws below the waist.
What has happened to Judo? Why has it become something similar to Greco-Roman wrestling but with a Gi?

1. Ground aspect is heavily taken away, essentially you have about 5 seconds to get some sort of positive momentum, any sort of stalling on the mat will be immediately stood up. Trust me, many, many, many of us hate this aspect. There is benefits towards it making you more aggressive on the mat, instead of passive. But it is ridiculous at this point how little time they give you.
2. This is going along with a ton of other new IJF rule changes to make the sport more specatator friendly, including rules against common grip fighting techniques. I'm all for speeding it up, there is still a chess match, but yes their idea is you go as soon as you grip.
3. Foot sweeps and all are still legal, however anything in which your hands attack below the waist as a primary throw is illegal now. So no double leg or single leg take downs, a lot of people felt this rule was to eliminate "wrestling in a gi".
There is a movement towards smaller tournaments under older rule sets, but most people aren't happy with IJF rule changes, at this point I prefer to go to NAGA tournaments instead of Judo tournaments because of just how crappy the rule set with the sport has gotten.

Was there any specific reason for the new IJF rules besides to make it more spectator friendly?
Why did they ban the holds below the waist? Were they scared of the single and double leg takedowns becoming too prominent or were people doing them heaps?

Despite the fact some spectators might see the ground game as unexciting, I'm sad to see some organizations close to completely eliminating the ground game, it takes away from the self defense aspect.

I hate the new rules. And some of you may have noticed it on other sites from me, but I also go to events like naga and sub hunts primarily because of the new rules. Its almost Like judo is a limbo sport/art. Is it technically grappling when you don't fight on the ground? (Obviously yes but its still confusing) I'm not nationally recognized for my rank in judo and I don't care either. Because I care more about what they do, not some terrible ruleset where everyone just turtles up. But what can yah do right? Just be happy you learned it while there were no schools telling students to turtle up if a throw goes sour
