This is kind of long sorry.
6 months after I come to America, I did Bajiquan and haven't stopped since. I've been going for almost 2 1/2 years and I have been here for 3 years. Anyways I feel as if I learned enough from Bajiquan, plus it has a very small curriculum when it comes down to forms which in turn I see very limiting. I think Bajiquan is very limiting in general. We don't spar using Sanshou therefore we use the traditional stance (which is kind of like a Karate stance but the hands are WAY more far apart) which I do not like at all but we do go semi contact to full contact which is good. I have learned and memorized the two man routine, Xiao Baji form, Da Baji form, and the weapons form of spear, staff, and sabre. Right now we are in the middle of being taught the eight postures which are 8 ways/methods of attacking your opponent. But in all, i'm starting to doubt the effectiveness of Baji in a fight. It is true that you can generate lots of power in Baji but for fighting in the streets, I don't think it's going to be that useful (especially to me since I live in NYC and need to defend myself) The only move I would use from Baji in a fight is the push kick and that's in the majority of martial arts. So I have been shopping around in NYC and trying to find schools around me and I found this one school that teaches Chen Taijiquan, Five Animals, and Sanshou/Sanda and the Sanshou/Sanda is incorporated with either the Five Animals or Taijiquan. If I actually stop doing Baji and go to the other school, i'm gonna pick Taiji because I have always wanted to do it and it's the only internal martial art I like. (never liked Baguazhang and Xingyiquan and starting not to like Bajiquan) My question is should I quit Baji and go learn Taiji and Sanshou/Sanda and is Taiji effective for self defense purposes?
