If you have an advantage over your attacker whatsoever you can use that to defend yourself. With that being said some places practice more self defense situations than others. I've never taken BJJ but I would assume more time spent defending against strikes while grounded would improve your odds in a self defense situation.
Even if you know how to do a double leg takedown, it doesn't take a genius to get into the mount and bash the attacker's face in while he probably has no idea how to escape the mount. Things like that can make grapplers dominate on the streets, not just the ground fighting.

Which BJJ schools are the most legit for self defense? What do you think about Gracie Barra? Gracie Barra is alright, just try to make sure it's not one of those "1 week training" Gracie schools and you're ready for self defense.. Personally I'd say Dethrone Basecamp is a pretty damn good place to train for grappling self-defense in general. Art of Jiu-Jitsu Academy is a great place as well. Trained there a few times with Mendes brothers. Really worth checking out. You could also look into training in wrestling if it really comes down to self defense, would just be more bang for your buck, and a good one at that. A solid Takedown in a street fight against a single assailant almost guarantees a free path to the victor, and if anything, a wrestler on top will never fall off.

Gracie Barra is not very highly regarded in the BJJ community. From easy belt promotions, to forcing people to wear their gi's.
In my opinion any BJJ school is good for self-defense regardless of the context they train in. But if you don't adhere to that school of thought, Gracie BJJ is probably what you want. They train in a self-defense context. But in my opinion they are no better than Gracie Barra. I went to a Gracie school, and they handed me a check list of classes I needed to go to, to rank up. I thought the concept was ridiculous and I never looked back. Gracie and Gracie Barra are as close as you get to a McDojo as you can get.
Chances are if you pick any other BJJ school, you'll do fine there.

Ouchie. I train at a Gracie Barra school, never seen anything to convince me that it's a McDojo. I pay by the month for unlimited classes in BJJ, Muay Thai, the mixed class and free rolling class, never got a check-list. ...actually I do have to wear the gi to every one of the BJJ classes but it's entirely up to me what I wear to the Muay Thai, mixed or free rolling classes. I do get hammered at the pure grappling tournaments but I'm still convinced that's my problem rather than the school's.

I'm not saying Gracie Barra is a McDojo, because it isn't. But I am saying it's the closest thing to it. Lord knows that Gracie Barra is 1000x better than a majority of the actual McDojo's out there. The only things that are questionable about it are it's relaxed standards, which only lead to earlier belt promotions, which is in no way a reflection of poor skill, and just the fact that you have to wear their gi's.
So I meant no offense Odee. If you were going to a UFC gym now on the other hand....I'd say you were in trouble lol.

What's Bas Rutten's workout from 'Here Comes The Boom'? MMA disco? Do they actually offer MMA classes at those UFC gyms or is it like Tae Bo?

Theres one here in Abq. which of course is competing against Jacksons, and all the various other gyms here. I'm on the up and up when it comes to local MMA/BJJ news, and I never hear about the UFC gym, so I'm guessing it's very much like the Tae Bo shit.

That's more than a little disappointing.
