Check out the bindings on the top ones, they look just like Muay Thai rope wraps. I wonder if they used the same wrapping patterns? Points out another thing too. Humans have been smashing their hands and wrists in this boxing gig for a long time.

My bad. Those are freaking knuckle dusters secured with wrist wraps. Looks like they had way more interest in preserving hands than preserving looks. I'm betting there weren't many Greek Adonis who boxed.

My bad. Those are freaking knuckle dusters secured with wrist wraps. Looks like they had way more interest in preserving hands than preserving looks. I'm betting there weren't many Greek Adonis who boxed. It was the romans who used the metal on their gloves while the greeks used pure leather but eventually they found a way to make a solid tight round learher knuckle duster called an "oxys" that would really mess peoples faces up and I never heard of any adonists doing it as it was quite known for it's brutal disfigurements and cauliflower ear was a lot more common almost every boxer had it. And remember if your hands were crippled you wouldn't make a very good soldier and everyone was a soldier then so preserving them would be more important. Apparently the style changed with the gloves too from being very fast & offensive with the wraps to eventually highly defensive with the knuckle dusters. so where the hell did thai boxing start? lol Everyone has always had their own fighting styles since the the 1st war they ever fought in but apparently thai boxing has roots in the Ayutthaya Kingdom (1300s - 1700s) and probably further back to Indian styles like Adithada, Malla-yuddha & Musti-Yuddha which are very similar to muay thai and the other south east asian kickboxing styles. There was also the Khmer Empire (800s-1400s) that was Thailand that eventually became Cambodia who sue a similar style called Pradal Serey that dates back way far to the 800s where their are bas reliefs depicting a similar style. And the Khmers were highly influenced by the Indians to the extant of the Romans were influenced by the Greeks in their language, religion, weapons technology which was likely related to the martial arts they used along with them. The history of south east asia is pretty complex so it's hard to tell exactly but it seems to be Indian styles mixed with indigenous things which make the styles a bit different but still really close in how they look. Someone else told me that it started to become a serious sport in the 1500s too but was likely to be a sport alongside a war art just like modern karate exists as a self defence/hand to combat art & a combat sport at the same time and still does today but it's rare to find a pure old school place that teaches the mais. @gunter- Who knows but I think it's because there are only so many ways your body can move and so many places you can use to hit with efficiently against weak targets. Like it wouldn't be smart of me to try to his someones knee with my nose lol but it would be smart of someone to hit my nose with their knee.
