Very. Is it perfect? No. But it teaches one how to protect their head extremely well and their punches are insane. Plus there's really no better way to learn to fight than by fighting, and that's exactly how boxers perfect their craft. Are most pure boxers susceptible to leg kicks? Of course. But realistically speaking, how many videos have you seen of fighters from ANY other background doing anything this badass? www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d3KM_OMOxkwww.youtube.com/watch?v=ddzeuA0KTmkAnd here's a video of what happens when you tell a boxer that you can out punch them using another style: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=T6TM2Skk6Mw

First day of Boxing you learn that getting punched in the face hurts like hell, you learn that by getting punched in the face. The self defense is learning to hit while being hit.

Why have I never seen that one? I'm gonna start using it along with the other two I posted. 3 awesome boxers taking on multiple opponents is way cooler than just 2, after all. This thread is making me want to brush up on my straight up boxing skills, too...

I might just have to brush up on my boxing, soon. I really do consider it one of the best things anybody can learn for self defense. Limited, yes, but devastating! And it's also one of those styles that can and will benefit anybody of any style background. Adding boxing to Karate, Muay Thai, Judo, BJJ, Wrestling, or whatever the heck you want will always teach you something useful.

True enough, Chef, but at the same time there are a TON of boxers out there that are capable of taking out some very highly skilled martial artists even though they're at a disadvantage when it comes to their arsenal (particularly with kicks). Many a trained martial artist has been knocked out against a straight up boxer because they didn't keep in mind exactly how great a boxer is with their hands.

that's where tactics come in and if a boxer can play his range and punch the other guy is sol if he can't get past thet but if the boxer can't punch becuase he's out of range and can't get in he's screwed & that's where having a bigger arsenal allows you to have better tactics.
and some martial srtists are better punchers than boxers... boxing doesn't make people great punchers it just helps because in the end it's up to the person.

It's a pity no Kickboxing or MMA organisation has ever had the money to convince one of the top Boxers to have a shot. As it is they've only managed to secure has-beens or never-were fighters and it ends kind of like this www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBG9PeImA10Frankly I thought the Kickboxer probably could have outboxed that particular Boxer if he chose to. It's a shame but that's the simple fact of the matter, no big time Boxer is going to risk his big time paycheck to face a potentially career and body crippling match-up with another artist especially after Ali's encounter with Inoki. The IBO would take a crushing blow if something like that happened again and I'd bet they have methods of preventing it. But that's a fighter vs fighter match-up and I see those as rare to the street. As he is at the moment (friendly, retired and past his prime) I'd bet 80-90% of adult males on this planet would have no hope of beating Mike Tyson in a street fight. Of the other 10-20% who might would all be able to I'd bet most belong to special military units and the others are top fighting athletes in their own leagues, they aren't the Average Joe, not even close.

A good boxer can knock any martial artist out given the right punch and timing. And most martial artist can do the same back to a Boxer given the same viables. All depends on the individual. But to say Boxing is only good as long as the other person doesn't know any martial arts is wrong. Check out Junior Dos Santos, he has knocked out quality Kickboxers, Muay Thai fighters, Judokas and BJJ fighters.

Boxing is always full-contact and that puts it above every single martial art school that doesn't practice full-contact sparring. There is no mistake and you'll be informed rather bluntly at any gym you attend, if you don't get involved in the full-contact sparring you aren't practicing Boxing, you're doing booty boot camp at best. If you practice a martial art or military defendo systems and don't want to pick up bruises there are teachers who will let you advance anyway, that's why there are black-belts and Kung Fu masters who have never been hit before. I cringe when I see 'trained' people back down after the first time they recieve a solid hit, it should be laughable but it's so common and others believe those people are anything but wimps. That's when it's just sad. Somebody who practices a martial art should never back down, they should be forced back or not go back at all.
