In January, I decided that 238 pounds was too damn much. I dropped down to 204 (Post BM weight) and then plateaued. My diet stopped there for a while and I just ate smaller portions so I haven't gained any more weight. The exercise from Muay Thai training also helped there. But now due to Achilles Tendonitis I have to wear a fracture boot at all times to keep the tendon immobile and I can't train, so I figure it's best to get back to dieting. I've tried a lot of different diets, and what works best for me is a diet low in carbohydrates with a focus on keeping saturated fats to a minimum so the diet is as safe as possible. However, it's a diet that I always seem to get a lot of plateaus on.
So the purpose of this thread: Help Glutton lose weight! What tips can you share that could help me out? I'll be sticking to this diet for now. If you have a diet that I may not have looked into that worked for you, please let me know. I might try it after I plateau again. Also, if you have experience with low carb diets yourself and have found an effective way to get past a plateau please share your advice.
Thanks!

I hear ya bro I need to lose a few lbs too 250 isn't exactly my peak of fitness lol
I've been losing weight just by cutting pop from my diet and doing everything normal I've lost 10 lbs so far in the past few months but it's a bit slow.
It's hard when your a glutton for the sweet stuff I know from experience.
all I can think of is more calorie output than intake and try to avoid refined sugars and chemicals.
the way chemicals affect you is your liver process your fat but if it's too busy dealing with chemicals (it's other function) than it won't process fat properly and it will get stored.

Look into carb cycling dude. It's very cool. You don't wanna do low carb atkins stuff, because eventually you start losing muscle mass. With carb cycling, your doing the same thing as a low carb diet, your emptying your glycogen storage, so that your body is now running on fat instead of glycogen....but after I believe like a week your body starts using muscle as energy....so before that occurs, you start reintroducing carbs. So alot of these guys will do no carbs one day (under 20 g. carbs) and then low carbs (under 50 g. carbs, and finally high carbs, (under 150 carbs) But I just don't get how the body reacts so quickly to this process, So I would try doing no carbs for a few days, then low carbs for a few days and high carbs for a day or two.
A good thing to stop you from plateauing is having a cheat day. It's good for your mental health and its good for resetting your metabolism. Eat whatever your want that day. Then your metabolism kinda freaks out. I've had good results with it.

I do have a cheat day. I couldn't go without a six pack of beer at least once a week. Also, the myth that your body will attack muscle mass is way blown out of proportion. Your body will only attack the proteins in your muscles and organs if ketone bodies are completely diminished. That basically means serious malnutrition. It's something that happens to people when they fast for long periods, not from any known diet. The biggest risk of the Atkins diet isn't from a lack of carbs, but from basically saying that it's okay to eat as much fatty meat as possible. This often causes dieters to intake a ton of saturated fat that can lead to cardiovascular illness. Hence why I reduce carbohydrates to cause ketosis, but stay away from overly fatty foods as well focusing on lean meats, fish, and nuts for healthy fats.
If you saw what I eat on this diet your mind would be blown. The last few days I've been eating like a rabbit... That also eats chicken...

Well glutton you may need to alter you cheat day just a little. Beer is nothing but empty calories. All of you drinks should be zero calories unless it is a protein shake. You cheat day is a day that you make sure you get some carbs in your die like whole grain pasta, brown rice, even pizza will help and this is just for one meal, not all day. remove all fried foods and stick to lean proteins like grill chicken, whitefish, and no more than once a week a lean steak like sirloin. Increase you vegetables intake like steamed broccoli, steamed green bean or asparagus. These are good carbs and provide fiber. Stay away from processed foods, white bread, etc. Just whole grains.

Yeah, I should mention, with carb cycling on high carb days, just because its a carb day doesn't mean you get to eat whatever you want. You gotta eat healthy carbs like JW said.

I didn't mean I was going to JUST have beer on my cheat day. It's just the only day I'll allow myself to drink beer since it's a carb day anyway. I'm a big beer dork. I don't currently brew at home yet, but I plan on starting, and I like to travel to all sorts of different beer shops in the area to see what kinds of special brew they carry and try them. Sure, beer isn't healthy, but it's a guilty pleasure of mine. I've also found that it has little effect on my diet as long as I limit beer intake only to once per week. It's enough to keep me enjoying one of my many countless hobbies but not enough to significantly slow my weight loss. Or at the very least, it didn't in the past when I dropped my initial 30 lbs.

You would be surprise how much it really affects your weight loss. Those are empty calories. You dont want your calories to come from what you drink. Be that soda, juice or beer. The calories are called empty calories because they provide no nutritional value. It you are going to intake calories at least certain the provide good nutrition to your body.
Of course the choice is yours. But if you are serious about removing that plateau you need to eat clean. Diet is a 4 letter word that we use the wrong way. Diet is what we eat. It should not be used to say this how we lose weight. But to lose weight and not lose muscle you have to make lifestyle changes and eat a healthy diet for your body. Some people will burn the calories from beer or soda better than others. Most most of us do not have the genetics. We have to eliminate those things that will later be stored as fat. We also have to do more resistance exercises along with cardiovascular exercises to build muscle that also burns fat at the same time.

I appreciate the concern. I'll try not to overdo it. Since I haven't had much issue with alcohol while dieting in the past, I'm not quite as concerned, but I'll keep the amount lower for a while and see how much difference it makes for me.

I think complex carbohydrates have been highly underated. You need slow release carbs (even if it's cycled every 5 days the way Keys explained* new nickname). Sometimes it's the carb that gets a bad rap and not the toppings that go with it. For example with a couple of small baked potatos try blender with cottage cheese not sour cream. (once it's blended it taste the same and you can add soy bacon bits, chives and finely diced onions with just a shot of worsheshire). 40 mins after a carb meal I tend to kick up the circuit with aerobic/light weights graduating to a pyramid of a medium weight circuit.

I was 206 lbs about 2 months ago, that is too much considering I'm 5'5. I started counting calories, I eat 1500 a day, with one cheat day a week. Basically I cut ALL my meals in half. So far I've lost 19 lbs, seems to be working My weakness is food, I love to eat, carbs (pasta, pizza, bread, doughnuts too) and sweets specially. May I suggest something similar? reducing calorie intake ?

Mayhaps. The problem is that I've cut calories a ton of times and it hasn't been as effective for me. I've read that different diets work for different people. The low carb approach is HARD! But it's all I've been able to find that works for me. If I hit another plateau, I may switch gears and try cutting calories again. I've already started to lose some lbs again so far, though.
One thing I've noticed is that the fatter I get, the faster I burn weight. It only took about 2 months to burn the first 20 lbs, then 2 more to burn 10. I'm curious to see how I'll do this time around. Hopefully I can at least get down to 190 or so by the end of the year. My original goal was my new years resolution and it was to get below 200 by the end of the year. Since I'm already at 204 right now, I think it's safe to push that goal further.

Took my first weight today. I'm at 200.5 lbs. That's about 5 lbs, maybe more, down in just a few days. Good results so far!

looks like 190 is closer than the end of the year than you thought if you keep doing what your doing.

Indeed! I don't want to jynx myself, so I won't say anything like "maybe I'll get even lower than that!"
If I say I won't say it, it doesn't jynx me right?
