I've got a real stick in my @ss about Krav Maga in the U.S. I've gone to 3 schools in my area and what I'm seeing is a joke. A bunch of soccer moms jumping around like they're doing Jazzercise, exercise only. Teaching nothing more than groin grabs and eye gouges. Teaching small women to get in close to their bigger, stronger attackers, MISTAKE.
Even worse, a bunch of underqualified instructors trashing every other style besides theirs, MMA and TMAs both.
What am I missing?

Krav Maga is the new Ninjutsu... it is flavor of the month, and suffers from horrendous quality control.
A lot of it is political but you had guys like Darren Levine (who is a legit badass) take it commercial and essentially offer "Instructor Courses" i.e. give me 200 bucks, spend two weeks, and you are granted an official KMAA "Instructor".
So essentially it became a boon for a lot of the personal trainer types who could add on to their personal training "Krav Maga". So what you get is watered down soccer mom BS, who under the auspices of the "Bad ass Israeli Martial Art" they are getting essentially Tae Bo with eye gouges.
It is a HUGE problem. YOu have had like 3 or 4 splits and factions and now there are like 10 different Krav Organizations. I would tend to stick with IKMF schools and KMWW, anything with Eyal Yanilov at its roots is good to go to me.
The crappy thing is Levine is legitimately a great Martial Artist, and a good Kravist. But he probably single handedly began to bring Krav down to where there are all these crazy off shoots, and Cardio Krav classes out there now.

Cardio Krav, LOL, that's as bad as one of my neighbor moms who told me she takes Combat Tae Bo classes. I'm not joking by the way.

I never reccomend any woman take on a full grown man. We don't need to be so PC about it. Men are bigger stronger, and kicking a full grown man in the nuts won't disable him, it'll piss him off more, into raping you. I don't care what style you practice, a 230 pound man vs a 100 pound woman will not end well.
I always recommend to just get your CCW license and to buy a gun that you know well and you could work in a tight situation.

What about Cris Santos?
And yes, definitely buy a gun and get proper training with it.

I've been pointing it out on Yahoo for weeks. I guess people really can't believe it until they see it. "Teh Deadly" is pointless unless you actually have the ring-craft from sparring to force it on your opponent. That's why I really don't believe it matters if you have a boxing glove on the end of your arm or a spearhand or fingers ready to eye gouge or even a knife. If you can't hit your opponent with the glove there's really no chance that you're going to reach them with any of the other things.

I said it in Y!A and I will say it here. Any form of military hand to hand that trains the special forces is scrutinized by the upper bureaucratic echelons of the military. Big wigs decide what civilians can and can not be shown. Also what is being shown is not updated material, or is specified in the extent and context it can be shown. It maybe a fine auxiliary art under a reputable instructor but you need a good foundation in a complete system. That is why you can purchase Paul Vunak Jkd cds realitively cheap in comparison to a good Thai or BJJ video. Ps- What Keys says about purchasing a side arm is true, and what Ode said about practical ring experiance is also true. Other arts that may help women is Filipino pinching and biting arts of Dumog as tearing a gash in human skin and repeatedly striking it will cause one to let go.

Well, on one hand, I'm glad that another style other than Taekwondo is getting it's share of McDojos. That dilutes some of the negative attention we get in TKD. Misery loves company!
But on the other hand, that's like being glad you don't have any dandelions in the yard - they're all being strangled out by the crabgrass... :-(

Well.. I've gone against my instructors' sister, she can't be more than 100 pounds, and by God.. my ass was practically handed to me. I shit you not, half the guys I go against are significantly weaker than her. I think she's wrestled before, shit, atleast I hope she has. I only see that type of significant speed and strength in wrestlers, not the kind where they're just strong, but more like the "explosive" strength, either that, or genetic superiority goes a long way with her. If I had to guess? It's a mixture of both. I remember looking at her the first time and thinking to myself if I should go light.. We slap hands and boom! Tightest fucking Armbar ever, forget about flexibility here, if she has it, she has it. I don't care if you stack her into the damn floor, she's going to hold onto your arm, and break that shit if you don't tap. Regardless, not all women are genetically superior, and we're talking about Krav-Maga here. So back on track. I always thought it was actually good for fighting?! Then again, I'm going by what I've heard from the media. Hm. Are you sure these weren't just McDojos you visited? The setting sounds a bit eery.. Soccer moms.

Why do we accept most of what the media tells us? They lie all of the time. I'm not going to say anything bad about krav maga. You have good and bad teachers. I agree that it is the flavor of the month like judomofo said. You don't learn krav maga to fight. You will not get into cage and compete with what you are taught. It is supposed to help you successfully defend yourself if you have been attacked.

Well not the media, rather YouTube videos. I've seen Krav Maga against an MMA fighter and well.. Krav Maga stacked up pretty well for a while, of course the MMA fighter won in the end though. That's what I meant by "the media." Media as in watching YouTube sanctioned fights of Krav Maga, hence why I thought it was for fighting as well. Turns out its not. Oops!

Johnnie - I would say YouTube is worse than the media. It is completely one sided to favor the person who posts. Yes, I agree with you, I think they were McDojo styles of KM. The bad thing is I haven't been able to find one that wasn't. I practice Hapkido once in a while and really like the joint manipulation, that's why I've been looking for a good KM school to expand on that type of self defense. Just having no luck.

If you already have some quality experience with martial arts you'd really only need a technique guide and a partner to start adding to that part of your skill set, it's not like any Krav techniques are overly difficult.
