For the most part frasier guys with AIDS and HIV aren't out there in Martial Arts sparring and fighting to where they might get cut. Anyone with half a conscious who did have HIV would probably be very open to letting any instructor know about their medical condition, not doing so would be criminally negligant.
Homosexuality doesn't bother me, I think at this point my generation (those in our mid 30s and younger) homosexuality doesn't have the same taboo sort of thing to it than it does in older generations, we grew up more with knowing people, and being taught acceptance.
And most older generation people are open minded enough not to let those sort of things bother them.
You might have a few bigoted sort of people out there, but the funny thing is, the more closed minded and bigoted you are, the worst of a Martial Artist you become. In order to become remotely good, that sort of small stuff is meaningless to you.
Just my two cents.

I have no problem with it. Alot of guys in BJJ, seem to take issue with it, and I think its stupid and petty. Girls take issue with rolling with guys for the same reason. What I've found is when your sparring or rolling, you don't have time to really think about your sexual impulses...you're worried about not getting hit or submitted.
The AID's issue however is a no-brainer....as terrible as it is to say it, they really have no business participating in martial arts. In every other walk of life, I believe they deserve to be treated equally....but the risk of becoming infected is just higher in Martial Arts. And while it isn't a death sentence, like it would have been in the 80's or 90's....it is a definite life changer, that you should not have the ability to put on anyone.

I mean homosexuality in general.. Not really bringing the whole AIDS/HIV into it because Heterosexuals have the same risk to get it.
But I do agree those with AIDS/HIV shouldn't participate in Martial Arts due to the risk of spreading the infection.

I find it rather difficult to hate on gay rollers when there are totally hetro guys who will do worse to you. Honestly I'm plain old pissed off by anyone who grabs my package or pokes where they shouldn't. I really don't care what their sexual preferences are.

Honestly, those that are so concerned about doing any kind of activity with a homosexual person is just displaying their own insecurity. In many cases with martial arts, any kind of sexual thoughts should be kept out of the dojo/gym regardless of opponent's gender and sexual orientation (This includes a male sparring with a female).
Even in the military, survey had shown that majority of servicemen/women did not care about their battle buddies' sexual orientation. Most soldiers I know didn't give a rats ass about the don't ask don't tell policy. Even during the DADT days, most homosexual soldier's sexual orientations were known. 99% of the time, no one reports them because it really makes no difference. I trained with a few gay soldiers in my previous unit that eventually "came out" in public after the DADT repeal.
Funny how we say "insecure" people worry about these things, when they're the ones that flatter themselves so much that they think every gay man is out there to cop a feel from them. It's just so petty.
AIDS and HIV is a completely separate issue from practicing with a homosexual person. I'm sure everyone will have a general agreement on the limitations that someone who has AIDS/HIV should have in their martial arts training.

frasier, STDs are more prevalent in the heterosexual community per capita than the homosexual community. Sorry, but that's a fail at playing 'devil's advocate'.
And for my response to the initial question. I could care less. I have in the past been aprehensive about rolling and sparring in general with women, because of the "boob grab" etc. However, after practicing with a number of women over the years, I've been more worried about them kicking my ass. If you're rolling things happen, as long as nobody's actively assaulting their partner in a sexual manner then it's all a part of the practice.

aaronj.....thank you for saying I fail LOL I tried to play devil's advocate to get discussion going. This place stalls sometimes. And I did not know that STDs are more prevalent in the hetro community. That is something I am glad to have learnt.

I'm ok with people being gay. There's nothing wrong with it and they should do what they wanna do without being made fun of for it.

A dojo is family. No one is bothered by what your sexual preference is or what race you are. If you were in NZ, no one would even care.

There's a homosexual capoeirista in my group. He's universally respected among the rest of us because of his incredible skill at playing capoeira. Seriously, the last thing you'd be worry about whilst he's kicking the shit out of you (whilst standing on his hands) is his sexuality. Plus, he's a good enough guy, so why would we worry about something as minor as the fact he prefers men?

Personally I'm against homosexually. I don't consider myself a bigot. I don't have to be politically correct. I believe marriage should be between a man and a woman. I'm tolerant of those that don't believe as I do. I can accept them as humans. I just do not agree with their lifestyle no more than I'd agree with the lifestyle of a man that doesn't take care of his children. I have 2 son if they chose that lifestyle I would still love them the same. But I would not agree with their lifestyle. However, if a person is or isn't homosexual has no bearing on weather or not I will workout or train with them. That is their lifestyle. I believe in letting everyone live their own lifestyles. As long as they are not making advances towards me it's not a problem. By the same token I do not want a woman making advances towards me on the mat. The mat is not the place for that. In regards to the issue with aids if a person has the HIV virus or aids hopefully they will not pet others at risk. This shouldn't be a discussion about homosexuals as the highest group of people spreading the virus is not homosexuals. It is the heterosexual males in the teens to early twenties.

What's meant by lifestyle? It's not a choice they're born that way, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but would you dislike someone with a different race because they're born as such?
