Fish can be pretty finicky, I found that ignoring my fish tends to result in longer lasting fish. I could only see my last lot of goldfish from the top because the tank walls were solid green and they lasted ten years, before that I never had a fish last longer than one year.

The dirtier the tank, the better they last, I found. Especially bottom feeders.

Aren't goldfish kinda dirty? maybe by neglecting the tank you are actually creating a more natural ecosystem, or perhaps the constant cleaning is too traumatizing to them (changes of temperature, the bleach in the water, etc). I've had betas and goldfish, tried to keep the tank as clean as a could but the goldfish would not last long.

Yes, goldfish are dirty. But there's two kinds of dirty: high in nitrates/nitrites and high in algae. High algae can lead to high nitrates, which is why people try to get rid of it. The thing is that if you have a balanced tank and not too much chemicals, your fish will last a long time in algae-laden water. If you overfeed or your algae gets out of control (because you don't have algae eaters) then that causes high nitrates and (nitrites) that will kill the fish.

speaking of fish whether it be goldfish or not. i had a piranah when i was like 15. i would just feed it little fish way to much just to see it be a boss. it died because of over eating. kind of like a snake

Pirhanna are not bosses. They eat and fight on instinct and don't have any hierarchical aspirations. They're also not the most feared predators on the water (of their size). I recall a guy who purchased over $1000 in pirhanna, and for some reason decided to feed fugu (puffer) fish to it. (He found out they weren't poisonous because he hadn't been feeding them their natural diet). Within a day, his entire pirhanna farm was destroyed by $50 worth of worthless ugly non-puffing and non-poisonous puffers. The puffers were smaller than the pirhanna, which (sorry for the martial arts plug) once again shows how technique trumps size and strength (and, apparently... numbers!)

Size and strength hold their own. My goldfish ate my Siamese Fighting Fish.

My profile pic is a pres that I used to own. We miss him, but he is in a good home and has now produced a lot of puppies. He was ranked number 10 in the US last year. I didn't keep him because I wasn't going to use him in our breeding program. The couple that got him from me wanted him in their program.

Goldfish aren't dirty. They have a slimy coat. This coat will cause the tank to get dirty so to speak. Many other fish especially smaller fish will not survive because this coating will clog the gills of smaller fish and they drown. If your tank get too dirty depending on the hardiness of your fish they will die because you nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia levels will be too high for the fish to survive. You do need a certain level of algae in you tank. Algae eaters help to keep it at a safe level, but if you don't have enough they will starve. Lighting will increase your algae and neglecting to do water changes.

I didn't know all this, no wonder they wouldn't last for too long (a year max), I had betas that lasted longer though.

I dunno about not dirty JW. Goldfish actually come from shit creeks and streams in China and Japan. If you create a truly natural ecosystem goldfish tend to lose their sparkle and go back to a bronze colour. Wouldn't work for Black Moores because they're unnatural freaks but real goldfish like Comets, Commons and Flair-tails will become a murky colour that makes it impossible to see them.

It's a common misconception that they are dirty fish. But the goldfish has a thick layer coating. It acts as the first line defense against parasitic infections, bacteria, and other diseases that a fish may contract. This is why id you have Goldfish or any type of fish you have to find the right fish that are suitable tank mates. Bottom dweller fish like catfish are good tank mates for goldfish. Large fish like Oscars will survive, but they might get big enough to eat the gold fish depending on the size of the gold fish.

If the fish is most at home in a sewer it isn't exactly clean.
Goldfish survive best in nasty water so they're like the aquarium version of rats or pigeons...rats would be the more appropriate comparison since pet rats are fairly clean creatures but they thrive in dirty environments and they hold a dirty reputation.
